Note-taking methods that actually work

A plain guide to the main ways of taking notes, what each one is good for, and how to pick the right one for the class in front of you.

The Cornell method

The Cornell method splits a single page into three parts. Down the left you keep a narrow cue column. To the right of it sits a wider notes column, which is where you write during the lecture itself. Across the bottom of the page runs a summary strip. The layout is the whole point: it gives each stage of learning its own space, so the page does some of the reviewing for you.

How to use it

  1. During class, write in the notes column.Capture the main points in the wide right-hand column. Keep it fast and loose; you are recording, not polishing.
  2. After class, fill the cue column.In the narrow left column, write the key questions and keywords that each block of notes answers.
  3. Write the summary strip.At the bottom, sum up the page in a sentence or two, in your own words.
  4. Review by covering the notes.Hide the notes column, read a cue, and try to recall the answer. The layout turns your page into a self-test.

The outline method

The outline method arranges notes as an indented hierarchy. Main topics sit at the left margin, sub-points indent under them, and details indent again under those. The indentation itself shows the relationship: what is a heading, what belongs to it, and what is a small detail. It reads quickly because the structure is visible at a glance.

When it works best

  1. The material is already ordered.A textbook chapter or a lecture with clear sections maps cleanly onto an outline.
  2. You want speed.Indenting is faster than drawing, so it keeps up with a steady speaker.
  3. You will study by scanning.Headings and sub-points make it easy to find one fact later without rereading everything.
  4. It struggles with loose material.If a lecture jumps around or ideas connect sideways rather than top-down, an outline can feel forced.

Mapping and charting

Mapping and charting are two visual methods for material that a plain list does not capture well. Mapping is a diagram of how ideas connect: a central idea in the middle with branches spreading out to related points, so you can see the whole shape of a topic at once. Charting is a table for comparing items across columns, where each row is an item and each column is a feature you want to compare side by side.

  1. Map when ideas connect in many directions.Use mapping for a topic where one concept links to several others and the links matter as much as the points.
  2. Chart when you are comparing.Use charting when you have several items measured against the same set of features, like theories, dates, or case studies.
  3. Map to see the whole.A map is good for grasping structure and spotting gaps in your understanding.
  4. Chart to answer "how do these differ?"A chart lines up differences and similarities in one glance.

Which method for which class
